The idea of a world soul, first meaningfully explored in Western philosophy Plato’s dialogue Timaeus, has been drawn on throughout its doctrinal history to explain the relationship between god and cosmos with ensouled life forms. It played fundamental role accounts concerning organization nature physical universe our human understanding thereof, thus featured range cosmological, biological, epistemological contexts. This collection essays illustrates many such contexts, demonstrating that soul was more or less continuous staple ancient philosophical thought, at least until time Neoplatonists. volume follows chronologically, beginning soul’s early stirrings Heraclitus’ concept universal λόγος, ending glance Nachleben Renaissance modern philosophy.
